Magic of Reading

Many children with disabilities, regardless of their diagnoses, encounter difficulty reading. The "Magic of Reading" is our own innovative program designed to provide a positive environment for children to read confidently with teachers and mentors as coaches. It provides early intervention and reinforcement of basic reading skills that are needed as the foundation for success in the future. This program helps to develop phonologic awareness, phonetics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension reading skills in VERY early learners. For children with an ability to read at or near grade level, we put a strong emphasis on strengthening phonetic and word analysis skills. The activities that typically provide frustration and off task behavior have been removed from this program. There is little or no writing and absolutely no independent tasks, allowing teachers and students to interact. The environment is EXTREMELY positive to help the child become a successful and motivated reader. Current class information is listed below.

Magic of Reading Program: Winter 2008

 Description:

This is an ongoing reading program for children ages 5-9 who are struggling with reading. Struggling is defined as having difficulty decoding words, retaining sight words, building sentences, discussing stories and in need of confidence. Children need not be receiving special services in school to participate in this program; they may simply need a strong emphasis on strengthening phonetic and word analysis skills. With Debi Jarvie, Carolyn Schmidt, Theresa Diglio and other experienced teachers. Mentors attend the classes and act as reading buddies. Parent training sessions are planned throughout the school year. Classes visit The Chelsea on Changebridge Road to demonstrate newly acquired confidence and reading fluency through a reader’s theater style demonstration. Teachers will conduct EXTREMELY informal assessments for the purposes of screening children for program entrance only. Children may enter at the start of any session. Classes run 45 minutes long and are held twice a week. Click here for a registration form.

A Summer Filled with Magic of Safari!

Pathways for Exceptional Children began its first 4-week summer camp in June, 2008.  This camp was partially funded by a grant from the Department of Consumer Affairs. It was based on a SAFARI theme, linking science-based literature to reading instruction and providing a springboard to field trips to enhance the learning. Daily crafts directly related to the vocabulary and concepts taught. The camp was such a success that Pathways plans to expand it next summer to 6 weeks with a new theme, available to all children ages 4-10.  Thank you to Debi Jarvie and her staff for making this program a success that provided the children not only with the opportunity to improve on their skills, but also with many wonderful summer experiences to remember.

This program is run under the authority of the Montville Township Recreation Dept. For registration and questions, contact them at 973.331.3305. The registration form can also be downloaded at http://www.montvillenj.org. Click on Municipal Services, then Parks and Recreation, then Forms and Flyers.
