Learning Through Life:
Children with special needs require
experientially-based learning. They need to
touch and feel something for it to come alive
and have meaning. Pathways has developed the
successful Learning Through Life program
that integrates academics and life skills.
Children are learning math through cooking and
differentiating money by using coins as chips
for Bingo. They are getting motivated
to read and write while making grocery lists,
shopping online for a vacation, or making
Talking Books on computers. In this program,
learning academics is a creative process
integrated into daily life experiences that
help teach our children to achieve greater
independence in their lives.
"Project
Win-Win" is part of the Pathways Learning
Through Life program that focuses on employment training.
It consists of five six-week
sessions that run throughout the year, designed to help children with
special needs explore different career paths and
learn basic skills to enter the work force upon
graduation from high school.
Classes
are designed to meet the needs of children with
a broad array of ability levels. Project
Win-Win has been generously funded through
the help of grants from the Henry H. Kessler and
Starbucks Foundations.

Our goals,
dreams, and accomplishments:
Over
the summer, the kids chose to step into the
music industry by spending six weeks learning
about becoming a disc jockey with professional
DJ, Eli Kababa. They learned many facets of the
business, including how to run the equipment and
mix music. They then took their show on the road
and invited our friends from The Chelsea to a
1950’s dance. Pathways will be helping these
kids continue to practice this profession. On
October 3rd, they are performing with Eli Kababa
at a fund raiser in Summit, NJ .
At our
Food Service Exploration program earlier
this year, children
and mentors
got the opportunity to work in the kitchen and
dining room at The Chelsea At Montville.
Following safety and hygiene procedures, the
students set tables, took orders,
prepared and served meals, and cleared the
tables. Additional activities included planning,
shopping, and decorating for a dance. Many
thanks to the The Chelsea food service
department for providing this opportunity for
the
children to test their skills in a real working
environment.
At our Careers program, people with
disabilities who have achieved success in the
work field made presentations to our class. Police Officer Frank
Cooney talked about careers in law
enforcement and the Canine
Unit. Michelle McBriarty, professional pastry
chef, spoke about
the food
service industry. A field trip to
Encore Catering in East Hanover gave the
kids an opportunity to see how a catering
business works, tour the kitchens and create food of
their own. Special thanks to owner Lisa
Epstein and
the Encore staff for providing a great
learning experience!! Visit Encore
Catering at
